I have been working with young people with special needs for the past 10 years and it continues to be my passion. Originally from the UK, I have worked in a variety of settings including learning support departments and with young people in care. I then went on to focus on transition to employment before moving to Bangkok and becoming deputy head of a special needs school. After working there for 4 years, I saw the gap between education and employment and the need for transition services for people with special needs. I am one of the founders of Steps with Theera.

After teaching for five years in the USA, he moved overseas and started working at the International School Bangkok. Phil helped Tamara co-found the Special Education Network in Thailand in 2011 and is currently offering support for SENIT events. MacGregor Grier (Professional Development Events Coordinator)
Learning Support Teacher – NIST
A combination of curiosity and perseverance has led MacGregor through a lifelong journey of learning and teaching. Procuring and dissecting abandoned computers from a young age led to a career in teaching technical support. Passionate about both teaching and the concept of troubleshooting, MacGregor sought to translate those skills to young learners, and moved to the Philippines and started to teach special education. He is now a Learning Support teacher at NIST International School in Bangkok, where he works along with his wife Janelle, a high school counsellor. Being an advisor to the SENIA Manila Youth Group has inspired MacGregor to explore establishing a similar group in Bangkok, where kids with special needs and their friends can learn more about self-advocacy, teamwork, and confidence.
MacGregor lives in Bangkok with his wife, and together they have a son and another child on the way. He enjoys travel, learning languages, technology, fishing, reading, and acquiring new hobbies all the time!
Anna Gambles (Parent Representative)

Anna left a career in banking in London to move to Thailand almost 25 years ago, where she’s developed and pursued a passionate interest in all aspects of education. Throughout that time, she has taken an active role in many different charitable organisations including currently being a board member of LEAP (a support and advocacy group for parents of students with learning challenges) for over five years. Now a mother of two teenagers, Anna’s focus on the last decade has included being a PTA board member and president and a board member of an international school.
Phil Allen (Communications Support)

I have been teaching at primary age level for the past 12 years. Prior to becoming a teacher I spent 4 years working as a behaviour therapist with the London Early Autism Project in the UK and Dubai. I have also worked as both a family support worker, and a youth support worker within the social care system in the UK. Most recently I have spent time studying teachers knowledge and understanding of childhood mental health disorders for my MA. As I continue to develop my own knowledge and skills, I am keen to raise awareness of the difficulties some children experience, and help improve teacher understanding of childhood mental health disorders, in order for them to have greater confidence in supporting children’s mental health needs in schools. I am passionate about inclusive education and believe strongly in early intervention.

I have been working with children with special needs, children with challenging behaviours and children with social and emotional difficulties for 9 years now. Inclusive society is what I have been passionate about. I strongly believe that every child has the right to study, develop himself and reach his personal best with the right support from people around him. I have background both in education and psychology. I have had experiences working with children with special needs, children who experiences mental health problems, therapists, teachers and parents in different settings. I am now working as learning mentor at Shrewsbury Internationl School, Riverside campus and I am also a co-founder of SELF, an organisation which promotes social and emotional as well as mental health in children and young people. Learning Support Teacher – Australian International School Bangkok
I am entering my third here in Thailand as the Learning Support Teacher at the Australian International School Bangkok. Prior to working at AISB, I was an ESL teacher at a public elementary school in Taipei, Taiwan. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on ESL students.
I have always wanted to be a teacher. In college I settled on Special Education because I liked the varied nature of the work and the students I worked with. I am particularly interested in working with students who have Dyslexia as well as EAL students. I love working in the international environment and problem solving with classroom teachers to find strategies to differentiate and reach all learners in the classroom.

I am currently a Head of Academic Sector and a therapist who has been working with children with special needs at North Light Center for Special Needs Children for 6 years. I have a strong determination of providing the highest quality of services to all children with needs so that they can be independent and reach their full potential. From my experience, parent involvement plays essential role in an intervention, therefore; I will do my best to encourage and educate parents in order to bring good quality of life for their children.

I’m Nicky, I’ve been working at Steps since July 2016 as a trainee. My current role here includes office assistant which includes scanning, printing and laminating, making PDF forms, making documents, making sheets and making monthly newsletter for Steps. I like working at Steps because it is a very nice environment and comfortable place to work.
